Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Pickup and Cibodas Botanical Garden Birding to 19:00
Morning pickup at your requested location in Jakarta or Bandung (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim Whoosh Station, or hotel) in a comfortable private air-conditioned vehicle. We drive up through the Puncak highlands to Cibodas at 1,400 metres elevation and check in at our base hotel.
We spend the afternoon birding the mature native tree groves of Cibodas Botanical Garden until 19:00 WIB. Key targets include Pygmy Tit (Psaltria exilis) flitting through conifer needles, Sunda Minivet (Pericrocotus miniatus), Blood-breasted Flowerpecker, and Javan Robin (Myiomela diana) along shady montane gullies. Overnight at Cibodas base lodge.
Day 2: 05:30 Trail Ascent to Air Panas Hot Springs Campsite (6 km)
Early breakfast at 05:00. At 05:30, we pass through the national park gate to begin our mountain ascent. Our dedicated mountain porter team carries our camping equipment, personal duffels, and camp kitchen ahead to the site.
We hike and bird at an unhurried birders’ pace along the scenic 6-kilometer trail through primary submontane rainforest. We pause at Telaga Biru lake, Gayonggong swamp, and Cibeureum Waterfalls, where Javan Trogon (Apalharpactes reinwardtii) perches motionless in mid-canopy, Chestnut-bellied Partridge (Arborophila javanica) rustles in the undergrowth, and Sunda Forktail feeds along spray-drenched rocks. By mid-afternoon, we reach the campsite near the Air Panas natural thermal hot springs (approx. 2,150 m elevation). We settle into our pitched dome tents, enjoy hot tea and freshly cooked field meals, and conduct dusk owling for Javan Scops Owl (Otus angelinae) around the steaming thermal ravines.
Day 3: Pre-Dawn Ascent to Upper Ridge (1.5 km), Descent & Cibodas
Pre-dawn wakeup with hot coffee. Between 04:00 and 05:00, we make our ascent to the upper montane campsite and mossy ridge (approximately 1.5 km further, near Kandang Badak / Puncak saddle). This is the golden window for the elusive Javan Cochoa (Cochoa azurea), Javan Laughingthrush (Garrulax rufifrons), Javan Shortwing (Brachypteryx erythrogyna), and Horsfield’s Thrush (Zoothera horsfieldi), whose resonant dawn songs echo through the dwarf moss forest.
We bird the upper canopy trails until 10:00 AM. After a hearty mid-morning trail breakfast back at the Air Panas camp, we pack down and begin our descent. Birding continuously on the way down yields White-bibbed Babbler, Javan Tesia, and Lesser Shortwing. We arrive back at the Cibodas trailhead in the afternoon and check in to our comfortable hotel for a hot shower, checklist compilation, and celebratory dinner.
Day 4: Morning Session to 11:00 AM at Cibodas & Return Transfer
Early morning birding from 05:30 until 11:00 AM around the Cibodas forest fringe and golf course perimeter to clean up any remaining highland targets.
At 11:00 AM, we return to the hotel, freshen up, and complete our final species tally. Our private vehicle transfers you comfortably back to Jakarta (CGK Airport or hotel) or Bandung in time for your evening departure.
