Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Jakarta and Immediate Roadside Birding to Lodge

Morning pickup at your hotel in Jakarta or Bogor in our private vehicle. The scenic journey heads southwest into the rugged mountain interior of Banten and West Java (approximately 5 hours drive).

Upon reaching the entrance gate of Gunung Halimun Salak National Park, we immediately start active birding along the tranquil forest road winding through primary rainforest to our lodge at Cikaniki. We bird right from the vehicle and on foot, scanning flowering canopy trees for Javan Sunbird (Aethopyga mystacalis), Javan Leafbird (Chloropsis flavocristata), and White-breasted Babbler (Stachyris grammiceps) in the roadside underbrush. We check in at our forest lodge by late afternoon, followed by an evening walk along the river trail.

Day 2: Full Day Primary Rainforest & Canopy Walkway Exploration

A dedicated full day in the heart of primary submontane and montane rainforest. We start at first light around 05:30 on the famous Cikaniki canopy walkway, suspended 20 to 25 metres above the forest floor.

Eye-level canopy birding yields vibrant mixed flocks, Javan Leafbird, Blue Nuthatch, and Javan Sunbird. Looking across the canopy of giant Dipterocarps and Rasamala trees, we scan for soaring pairs of the endangered Javan Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi) and listening vigils for the rare Javan Crocias (Laniellus albonotatus). In the afternoon, we walk pristine river loops targeting the elusive Javan Blue-banded Kingfisher (Alcedo euryzona) along rushing forest streams, and watch for White-breasted Babbler in dense bamboo thickets alongside endemic primates including the silvery Javan Gibbon (Hylobates moloch) and Javan Surili. Evening checklist compilation over freshly prepared local cuisine.

Day 3: Morning Forest Session & Descent Road Birding to Jakarta

Dawn birding session around Cikaniki research station to catch early morning flock activity, targeting vocalizing Javan Crocias and Javan Leafbird in the emergent canopy. After a warm breakfast and checkout, we commence our return journey.

We bird continuously along the forest road as we descend out of the park, stopping at strategic ravines and clearings for any missing targets. In the afternoon, we rejoin the main highway and transfer comfortably back to Jakarta or Bogor, arriving in the evening.
